Role Overview

Physik Instrumente, LP, a global leader in precision motion and nanopositioning systems, is hiring an experienced Application Engineer in the Bay Area. This is a hands on, customer facing role based out of the Tech Center & Applications Lab in Fremont, CA, touching aspects of mechanical assembly, software programming, and system controls. Remote and onsite service and support will also be a component of this role.  A minimum of 3 years of experience is preferred for this role.

Role Description

Your primary objective will be to collaborate with customers during the sales process to identify, engineer, and advocate our best in class motion and positioning systems. This entails accurately capturing VoC to ensure pointed design solutions that meet customer application requirements. Additionally you will ensure industry trends are reported back internally to drive next generation product development. Post sales you will ensure PI solutions execute at or beyond expectations turning customers to long term partners. 


In the Tech Center & Applications Lab you will have access to the breadth PI’s product offering and capabilties. The facilities and tools of the Applications Lab will be at your disposal for recreating and testing issues reported in the field for your quick and accurate response to ensure customer system uptime. You will also use the lab to test PoCs and create demos to find solutions to current and future market needs. In the Tech Center you will host customer experiences with PI product and provide user trainings. You will support continuous improvement efforts to keep the center fresh and engaging. 


In the field you will perform standard and new product installations and custom retrofits. You will train customers on safe and proper use of PI product, support troubleshooting, and provide applications training to help customers reach next level performance they did not expect to realize. It will be your duty to gracefully complete the sales cycle ensuring a sound technical solution has been delivered. 


At all times, you will represent PI as an Application specialist, continuously proving the company’s leadership position in the industry and your place on our team.    

Key Requirements

  • BS Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or other related field
  • Experience with as much of the following strengthens your candidacy:
    • PI Hardware/Software
    • ACS Motion Control Hardware/SPiiPlus Software
    • Hexapod/Stewart Platforms
    • Piezo Actuators, Motors, Sensors
    • DC Stepper, Servo, & Linear Motors
    • Air Bearing Technology
    • Photonics, Lasers, SiP
    • Vision/Imaging
    • LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, VB, C, C++
    • Industrial Automation Controls 
    • Unix/Linux
  • Local travel within the Bay Area to customer locations 1-2 days/wk on average.
  • Overnight/long distance travel will occasionally be required (less than 10% is anticipated) 
  • Candidates must produce evidence permanent ability to live and work in the US.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills are a requirement of this position.
  • Preferred:  3+ years hands-on experience as a Motion Control Applications Engineer
